IN REVIEW – Poker Night

The Coopers Inn hosted the VFUA’s first ever poker night on Friday the 7th of August.

More than 50 members and guests vying for the title of 2015 poker champion. Up for grabs was a bounty of great prizes, foremost among which was a trip for two people to Bali for the winner.

the roomDavid Flegg was an early favourite, due to his proven prowess with numbers. Unfortunately his statistical abilities did not translate to the tables, and he was one of the first eliminated. Although a strong starter, Vice-president Adam Havelberg’s play declined in direct correlation to his consumption of alcohol – and the finalists probably have Carlton & United breweries for his elimination on the cusp of the final table. Another player who peaked too early was boundary umpire Adam Bell, who had one of the largest stacks of chips in the room at the half time break; only to transform into the ‘Bank of Bell’ when play resumed, spitting out chips with reckless abandon before his elimination.

The remaining 8 players convened on the final table, and although Leigh Keen had the support of the large crowd, the sizeable chip stacks amassed by Simon Blight and Josh Sanders rendered the final a two horse race. After a series of back-and-forth ‘all ins’, boundary umpire Simon Blight was victorious and will be Bali Bound in the near future.20150807_230820
