The Annual VFUA Golf Day took place last Sunday 24th of May at the Ivanhoe Golf course. The weather turned it up and produced a cracking day for a hit. For some, egos were on the line and winning was everything. For most, simply making contact with the golf ball and not losing it over the fence was success enough.
The format was 2 man Ambrose. This involved pairing up and playing off whoever had the ‘best hit’ out of the two. Luckily for Daniel Philp, he was paired up with Tristan Burgess who certainly knows his way around a golf course. Some chose their pairs wisely, such as the experienced duo of Thomas Chrystie and newcomer Aaron Langdon. Their master plan was somewhat ruined, however, after they found out they would be teeing off with the worst golfers in the VFUA – the combination of Lukes; Richardson and McIlroy, who were more interested in how fast the golf cart could go than their golf shots. It wasn’t all bad, with the Luke duo taking out the ‘best (worst?) dressed’ prize at the end of the day. A controversial result as rumour has it that Richo just wore his normal Sunday afternoon attire.
The likes of Matthew Young, the Main/Maine duo, and Chrystie/Langdon combination appeared to be the best hitters on the day, but none of which could outclass VFUA Life Member John Hall, who took it to the young fellas and won the ‘closest to the pin’ competition on the 4th hole.
After 3 hours, 9 holes, and a few mishaps including Jarryd Barry’s wallet (which was conveniently found in Daniel Butcher’s back pocket after 30 minutes of searching), the group of 35 retired to the club house for a well-deserved feed, drink and to witness the legendary Jamie Grindal umpire his 150th on Channel 7.
The announcement of the winning combination wrapped up the formalities, with Damien Main and Joshua Maine taking out the win over Chrystie and Langdon. Both pairs finished on 32.5, but a strong finish from the Main(e) duo saw them take the win on count back.
A massive thank you to John Howorth for organising the day. Everything ran flawlessly and from all accounts everybody had a great time. We cannot stress enough how ordinary you can be at golf and still have a fun day out. Luke Richardson rushed down to Savers half an hour before tee off to pick up a single left handed 6 iron, which was the only club he used for the entire day. No matter your ability, grab a partner, get a club, and put your name down for the 2017 VFUA Golf day!
