Lawn Bowls Review

Multitasking Michael Curtis

Allow me to paint you a word picture… You wake up, it’s a Sunday morning and you’re feeling surprisingly fresh from the night before. You look through a crack between your blinds and it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day. Alas! You remember that today is Sunday the 3rd of April, the day of the Annual VFUA Lawn Bowls day.  Haven’t the stars aligned for you? It’d be rude not to head down to Fitzroy Gardens to enjoy a cheeky snag and a bowl with your fellow VFUA members.

And that’s just what 31 members did.

An improvement on last year’s attendance, it was a picturesque day of low-key banter with an abundance of good company. With good representation from all disciplines, people came from far and wide, even El Presidenté Michael Curtis and Anna brought down the little ones along with Michael Blair bringing his little bub, it was quite literally on for young and old.

Michael Blair

Father of the year; Michael Blair

Heads of social functions and the organizers of the event, Tyler Hankinson and Patrick Burns were cooking up an absolute storm on the Barbie, with help from Jack Griffiths, there was plenty to go round. After laboring over the hot six burner BBQ, it was time for a little competition, an appropriation on a goal kicking contest, with two jacks set up the regulation 6.4m apart, thus begun the Goal Bowling contest. Contestants required to bowl the lawn bowl between the “goals” and one by one, they fell away. Timmy Carlos looked strong and I’m not referring to the countless hours he spends working on his biceps. But seemingly out of nowhere, someone who was thought to have been knocked in the 2nd round, Michael Blair, with baby in hand took away the win while simultaneously earning a “Father of the Year” nomination.

All in all, the day itself was a success. The VFUA wishes to thank all who made it possible and the members who came down, definitely not a bad way to kick off the year and a sign of good things to come on the social calendar.
